Mother Nature Is NOT Your Friend

Nancy Grace
We want to warn you about the dangers of winter and spring and what damage these seasons can wreak in your home.

We’ve all had not-so-nice experiences with Mother Nature. But most of us don’t think about the damage she can also do to our homes, specifically to our basements.

As we battle through the bitter cold of winter, we need to keep in mind the toll the weather can take on our homes. During winter, frost can cause cracks in the walls in your home and even make the walls shift in. Most people do not realize this until it’s too late! Even if frost wreaks havoc on your home, Northern States Basement Systems has plenty of effective and reasonably priced solutions to help you solve any wintertime basement issues!

All of us also need to prepare ourselves for the downside of spring (all though it might still seem far away at this point). All of the melting snow and humidity can cause terror in your basement.

In the spring, humidity in your basement can get incredibly high and has a 55% connection to mold growth. You will want to check your basement for mold BEFORE spring is upon us, so you can combat the problem before it actually becomes an issue and you have mold growth everywhere.

You also need to wary of all of the melting snow; all of that water can start seeping into your basement, causing lots of issues. Just be vigilant, and if you do see any water accumulation, be sure to call us right away at Northern States Basement Systems for a free estimate!

Good luck weathering our Minnesota climate and be sure to call us if you start experiencing any of these problems or be proactive and call us today!

A few years ago, we had two jobs in Ely, MN. Our crew had to spend a total of five days up in Ely to get all of the work done. The first client, ended up upping their bid, and one of our owners and office staff personnel, Nancy, had to bring up more waterguard than had been anticipated. This job was a building that was a lodge for a resort run by a Native American tribe. The men were able to stay in the lodge and the cabins while working there. However, a few years after we waterproofed the basement, the lodge unfortunately burnt down. During the second job, our crew claims they thought they were gonna die. When they were in the basement and he furnace turned on, it smelt like propane and gas. The men thought for sure they were going to die from inhaling the smell (they were all completely fine). This second job site was historical building - it was a big building, that required a couple of sump pumps to deal with all of the water.

We solved the issue with a sump pump. However, our crew had to go back a second time for the basement because there was a really bad flood in this customer’s town and the water had gotten high enough that it was up to his front door. But when the crew went to check, his basement had stayed completely dry. The only reason they had, had to go back was because the city had turned the underground power lines off during the flood.

We had an awesome job in Roseau, MN. The customer we were working with was incredibly welcoming to our crew. The man took our crew to the museum he worked at after hours, the museum had 4-wheelers and old snowmobiles. They all got along so well, that the man even asked them to stay longer and hang out. The first job was a basic waterproofing issue in the basement.
